Howdy! I'm a 24 year-old retread. I graduated a year ago from Texas A&M University (Class of '07) and found the job market sucked for B.S.'s in Psychology so 8 months after graduating and kicking around College Station as a Student Supervisor/Librarian at Texas A&M, I found myself in Corpus Christi working on a second Bachelors in Nursing at Texas A&M Corpus Christi. After I graduate and [hopefully] pass my boards I'll be going back to pursue a Masters/PhD in psych (if I can keep my GPA up now, it will make me much more competitive than what I had, which wasn't bad, just not stellar.)

Financial aide sucks, especially when you miss the cutoff date to declare as independent by one day, and cats don't count as dependents.

This is my second semester of nursing school (will graduate May 2010). This semester so far looks to be interesting - I should have horror stories the second half - I have maternity/nursery clinicals starting in April.

Nice to meet y'all :)

Nice to meet ya! Thanks for your post. I really do wish cats could be counted as dependents..my life would be so much easier, and the financial aid checks so much bigger ;)

Keep us posted on your nursing school adventures!

Thanks! At this point, I am amazing at planning a budget (following through, not so much). Financial aid checks don't go to far when textbooks are 2000 pages long per class, and you have to buy scrubs and stethoscopes :).

hey cool! i've thought really hard about nursing school. you'll be so glad for the guaranteed jobs when you get out.

i HATE that independent student bullshit... my parents didn't help me out for a DIME when i was in school, but they insisted on getting my parents financial info. i fought and fought and ended up getting around it by being declared a ward of the state under the table. it was a pain but it might be worth looking into if you run into that next time around.

I got around it eventually (partially by declaring myself independent on federal taxes) last year (I'm clear this year) but it took 10 rounds with financial aid, and another 10 to get them to understand that parent loans were not now, nor ever an option. (My mom could never afford to pay for anything and I'd not ask her to, and my dad won't.)

I like nursing school most days (I was planning on doing the 15 month second degree program, but they changed the start date of the program and I couldn't swing rent on two places and moving expenses and no job over the summer) - if you go, do it as a post-bac transfer student (5 semesters compared to the 4 of the accelerated program). Roughly half the people who fast-tracked it here have dropped back into the generic program, and it seems like most the students are a little older than the 18-22 demographic (90 people in my class).

Another Aggie!

Yeah, financial aid does suck. I'm having to do a request for financial aif increase due to a change in income and marital status. I really wish that I could claim pets as dependents. I'd have four dependents then! ^_^ That would be some serious financial aid money then.

hell, yes! I have one furmonster, and I would love to be able to claim him. I could claim "head of household/single parent" and really rake in the cash! Gotta buy those textbooks and that damn parking pass, etc.

With how much I spend on dog and ferret food/supplies, I should be able to claim them as dependents. I'll never have to deal with paying for their college education, but I still have the annual vaccines, pet-sitting, toys, etc. expenses.

No kidding, my cat eats better than I do. And has nicer toys. Now if only she'd stop tearing up the carpet to my room when I boot her out on those nights she's being a pest.

Fortunately for me, ferrets prefer cardbox boxes, paper bags, and cheap dryer tubing over expensive toys. The dog is happy with a couple of those pull-a-part toys, a weekly rawhide, and bone/meat scraps from the butcher down the road. I seriously love that butcher. He hates disposing of the bones, so sells them by the box for a couple bucks. One box lasts my dog for over a month.
